In a break from tradition, First Choice Group will, in 2017, be supporting one charity and one-charity alone. Old Tree Nursery has been chosen to benefit from 12 months of fundraising, corporate support and contributions.

The decision to streamline donations to this particular recipient came in October after the Wolverhampton based group – which provides training and employment opportunities for people with learning difficulties and poor mental health – was the victim of a robbery which claimed its entire funding.

First Choice Directors, John Whitehouse and Carl Bate were so moved by the group’s plight they donated £1,000 to its fundraising appeal which helped to save it from closure and restore its provision.

But what is Old Tree Nursery and how, with First Choice Group support, can it make a difference?

Old Tree Nursery is a plant and garden nursery set in a beautiful rural setting at Pendeford, Wolverhampton. The not-for-profit organisation offers training and employment opportunities for young people and adults with learning disabilities and poor mental health; mainly in horticulture, retail, catering and hospitality. There are also opportunities for people to train in and learn about social media, building websites, event management and business administration.

The primary purpose of Old Tree Nursery is to produce home grown plants, flowers, trees and fresh produce which can be sold to visitors and the general public at large, at events co-ordinated and held on site. To that end, the Nursery runs a range of community targeted activities each year with all the money raised being re-invested in the group to facilitate its employment, education and training opportunities.

Last July (2016) the Duke of Kent visited Old Tree’ to officially open Ruth’s Kitchen, a new tea room there which has been named after one of the nursery’s students.

“Community is at the very heart and soul of what First Choice Group stands for so we feel privileged to be able to support Old Tree Nursery as our chosen charity for 2017,” said John.
“It is a fantastic community resource which makes a real difference in people’s lives, giving those in need of help a real sense of hope and opportunity.
“Everyone who works there, the volunteers and the service users deserve recognition and credit for the effort they put in day-in-day-out supporting one another.”
